Street Stories

Soul sang about the dealer’s life before rap did. That way of telling it passed to rap in New York and Los Angeles, then to the South, and in Atlanta it got a name: trap.

Soul

Curtis Mayfield was uneasy with the way the film “Superfly” showed drugs and dealers without judging them either way, so his songs face poverty and the danger of drugs head-on. The dealer speaking for himself on “Pusherman” and the friend mourned on “Freddie’s Dead” were already there in the soul of those years. So was the home falling apart under drugs in Gil Scott-Heron’s “Home Is Where the Hatred Is”.

Old School

On “The Message” in 1982, Melle Mel described life in the projects closing in. In the last verse, a boy born in the ghetto with no future is pulled into crime and takes his own life in a prison cell. Run-DMC, with only a drum machine and a few scratches behind them, rapped about unemployment and prices on “It’s Like That” and about hard times on “Hard Times”.

Gangsta Rap

Rap that told the lives of gangs and dealers from the inside emerged in the mid-1980s, from Schoolly D in Philadelphia and Ice-T in Los Angeles. Ice-T’s “6 ‘N the Mornin’” follows a day from a 6 a.m. raid to an arrest over a single TR-808. Over the dry sound of a drum machine alone, N.W.A’s “Dopeman” lays out the dealer and the customers falling apart around him, without raising its voice.

In Texas, UGK rapped about life as dealers over beats as heavy and slow as the blues. In New Orleans, Master P at No Limit and Juvenile at Cash Money told the same life in the language of their streets. On Juvenile’s “Ha”, over a Mannie Fresh beat, every line outside the hook ends in “ha”.

Trap

T.I. named his 2003 album “Trap Muzik” and spread the word “trap”. On the sound side, Shawty Redd, who had been making beats for Atlanta rappers since his teens, set horror-movie synths and a heavy 808 under Young Jeezy’s first album. Once words about the dealer’s life met that dark sound, trap became the name of a genre.
