Posted from the Bedroom
Posted from the Bedroom
Uploading your own songs to SoundCloud or YouTube, with no label in between, became normal for rappers in the 2010s. A track made in a bedroom could be heard around the world as it was. Online, trap beats were remade into something sweet, and into something rough.
Trap
T.I.’s “24’s” was the first single from his 2003 album “Trap Muzik”, whose title later became the name of the music. As a teenager, Lex Luger emailed his beats to rappers he didn’t know and posted them on MySpace, and went on to produce Rick Ross’ “MC Hammer”. Metro Boomin of St. Louis started making beats at 13 and connected with rappers on Twitter. In 2024 he made “Like That”, featuring Kendrick Lamar, for his joint album with Future.
Cloud Rap
Cloud rap beats kept trap’s low end and blurred the edges of the sound with reverb. Passed around online, that sound reached A$AP Rocky in Harlem and, across the ocean, Yung Lean, a 16-year-old in Stockholm. Rocky’s “LVL” moves slowly over a Clams Casino beat with a voice sample ringing in the distance, and Lean’s video for “Ginseng Strip 2002”, shot around town after school, traveled fast.
SoundCloud Rap / Emo Rap
リル・ウージー・ヴァートの「XO Tour Llif3」では、「Push me to the edge」の一節が広く歌われた。
Young rappers emerged one after another from SoundCloud in the mid-2010s. XXXTentacion brought fully blown-out bass to trap beats and Lil Peep brought soft guitar, both of them half-shouting their anxiety and loneliness. On Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3”, the line “Push me to the edge” was sung everywhere. Songs uploaded without a label climbed straight onto the national charts.
BPlugg / PluggnB
Plugg, made by MexikoDro and others in Atlanta, took the weight out of trap beats and put glittering synths in front. One model people point to is the music of the video game “Paper Mario”. The beats went up on SoundCloud carrying a “Plug!” tag and spread from there. Playboi Carti rolled loose melodies over Pi’erre Bourne’s beats, and Summrs, from the pluggnB side, lays a sweetly sung voice over shimmering top lines.
Rage
Playboi Carti and Trippie Redd rapped, close to screaming, over beats stacked with layer on layer of distorted synths. “Rage” means a crowd at a show pushing, colliding and going wild. During lockdown, with live shows gone, the sound took its name from Trippie Redd’s “Miss the Rage”, a song that missed that heat. On “Vamp Anthem”, Carti’s beat chops up the organ of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue.
