Triplets from Memphis

For a long time hip-hop’s center was New York and Los Angeles, while Southern rap, in Houston, Atlanta and Memphis, grew a heaviness and darkness of its own. The way trap rappers chop their words today was born there too.

Over slowed-down, heavy beats, Southern rap spoke of fear before it spoke of toughness. The Geto Boys rap about sleepless nights, and Goodie Mob about the feeling of being watched through the window. Building an audience through local labels and tapes, without waiting for the big New York labels, was the Southern way too. On OutKast’s “Player’s Ball”, the slow, drawn-out accent becomes part of the sound itself.

Memphis Rap

In Memphis, DJ Spanish Fly sold his homemade tapes at the door of the clubs where he DJed, and DJ Paul, Juicy J and others sold cassettes they had made themselves. Over a muffled sound recorded on cheap gear and an 808 crawling along the floor, they split each beat into three and piled the words on. Outside the city the sound was barely known until Three 6 Mafia broke through nationally.

The triplet flow of the Memphis tapes became known across the US through Migos’ “Versace”, where the three chop their words fine and stack them as if trading lines. Today that way of cutting words is one of the most ordinary ways to ride a beat in hip-hop. 21 Savage uses it on “Bank Account”, a track for which he says he made the melody, bass and hi-hats himself.
